Professor Michael M Yang is currently Chair Professor of Chemistry and the Director of the Biotech and Health Centre of City University of Hong Kong. The research interest of Professor Yang’s group has been focused on the development of biochip technology for functional genomics, cell analysis, and molecular diagnostic and biosensing applications. Recently, Prof. Yang is also interested in studying the interactions between nanomaterials and biological systems from molecular to cellular levels in order to control and manipulate these interactions for biomedical applications.
Prof. Yang has published over 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 27 patents/patents pending in relevant fields, and has trained 24 Ph.D. and M.Phil. students and 12 postdoctoral fellows in his laboratory. He has been awarded the “Chunhui Scholar Award” by the Ministry of Education in China in 2003, the “K. C. Wong Foundation Outstanding Scholar Award” in 2004, and the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Award in 2006. He was a senior visiting professor in Tsinghua University in 2003 and holds honorary professorships in University of Central Lancashire (Britain), Zhejiang University, The Third Military Medical University, and the People’s Liberation Army’s General Hospital. Professor Yang also serves in the editorial boards of “The Analyst” (Royal Society of Chemistry, Britain), “Life Science Instruments” (Chinese Society of Chemistry), and “Microchimica Acta” (Germany). He is a co-founder of Genetel Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a City University spin-off company specializing in developing molecular diagnostic and therapeutic products for early detection and treatment of diseases, which was awarded the Technological Achievement Grand Award of the Hong Kong Awards for Industry in 2007.
