VI .完形填空。(共10小题,每小题1分,计10分)
Learning experiences happen to us in our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to share.
I was going to Marblehead   46   my sailboat team. The team was racing down the high-way   47  we felt hungry. Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand-new(崭新的)$20 bill. I was so   48  because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on food seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line.   49  I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I   50   I had not handed any money to the cashier(收银员). I had just walked out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.
My conscience(良心)opened its mouth and swallowed(吞)me in one big bite. I couldn’t get over it. I just couldn’t go back to the cashier and   51  my stolen pizza. I was so upset(不安的)that I refused to give myself the pleasure of an ice cream for   52  that someone would say, “Hey, Jeff. Why don’t you use the change from the pizza instead of that nice, new $ 20 bill?” I was not so proud of my cash now..
For the next two years, whenever the “pizza thing” came to my mind, I would say to myself, “Don’t think about it…”
I have learned two things from this   53  . Maybe I was a fool giving in to my conscience, and being too stupid to have a free pizza. But the real   54  is that even if you get away from what you have done, your conscience will catch up with you.
This goes with the saying, “A coward(懦夫)dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one.” I was a coward and have felt terrible   55  at least a thousand times. If I had been a “hero” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.
46. A. with   B. in    C. by   D. for
47. A. before   B. while   C. after   D. when
48. A. excited   B. satisfied  C. interested  D. relaxed
49. A. Immediately  B. Luckily  C. Finally  D. Easily
50. A. noticed   B. thought  C. knew   D. realized
51. A. give back  B. pay for  C. ask for   D. look for
52. A. hope   B. surprise  C. anger   D. fear

When a terrible earthquake hit, many people were killed and many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.
One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, a special picture touched me. It gave the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan. “We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We’ll share what we have with them.”
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. “Oh, dear,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Meghan said, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too.”
I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It’s easy to give something that we don’t want any more, but harder to give what we cherish(珍爱), isn’t it?

In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without first asking if it will disturb them.
At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap(水龙头)water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill.
Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing times for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.
Servings[(食物的)份 ] in restaurants are often large, too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself.
Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal.
Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.
66. In the US, people prefer to _____ rather than sit with people they don’t know.
   A. wait for a table

   C. order a cup of coffee
   D. ask people questions
67. What is served before you order?
   A. Bread.   B. Butter.    C. Coffee.  D. Cold water.
68. What do Americans always do when servings are too large for them?
   A. They take the food with a doggie bag for their dogs.
   B. They leave the food on the table and go away.
   C. They take the food home with a doggie bag and enjoy it later.
   D. They ask the waitress or waiter to keep the food for them.
69. Sunday dinner is _____.
   A. a dinner in the evening             B. a big meal at noon
   C. a big supper on Sunday             D. a supper on Sunday

   A. People wouldn’t like to sit with strangers at a table.
   B. If you order a cup of coffee, you may get another free one.
   C. A 15% tip in large cities means you are satisfied with service.
   D. Servings in restaurants are too large for many people to finish.

The 27-year-old Kaka is a different kind of star.
He was born to a rich family and enjoyed a comfortable early life. He joined Sao Paulo club at eight and signed as a professional(职业的)player at 15. Three years later, he was the best player in the team.
“I plan my career(事业)by setting myself goals,” he explained. “My goals drive me, they are what I fight for.”
And his next goal is to help the poor children. “When I was with the national team, we went to play in some of the poorer areas.” He said. “You see children who don’t have enough to eat.”

I’m Bill Smith. I work in this university library and today I’d like to tell you something about our library and show you how to use it. In the first room, you can find all kinds of dictionaries, guides and even telephone books. You may use these books only in this room. OK, let’s go to the next room. It’s a reading room. Different kinds of newspapers and magazines are kept here. You can always get them by yourselves. But you can’t take them out of this room. Now, we are in the third room. Here you can borrow novels, storybooks and science books. All the library’s books are listed here by title. When you are looking for a book, you must write the book’s title on a piece of paper and give it to the librarian. You must return the book in two weeks. OK, that’s all. If you have any other questions, ask me any time. I’d be glad to help you. Thank you.
