Steve is also a voice-over performer with his own studio, as well as a published photographer and writer. He also does graphic design.

He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He has been a Washington broadcaster for four decades, mainly hosting programs of classical and other music, and covering the performing arts as an interviewer and producer.

Steve combines a love of travel (especially to alpine regions), trains and airplanes with his interest in photography.

His other loves include classical music, symphonic film scores, Broadway and American popular standards and jazz, as well as theater and motion pictures.

He shares his house with a big gray-and-white —and very talkative — cat named Mr. Mewer.

美国媒体工作者对Steve Ember的评价:

It has been my pleasure to work with Steve Ember on our series, "John Eaton Presents the American Popular Song". Steve is a multi-talented Artist who brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and skill to the table. In addition to his impeccable editing, his mellisonant voice elegantly sets the stage for our listeners. His technical sophistication and musical fluency enable him to interact meaningfully with Artist and production personnel alike.

--Robert H. Grimes, Executive Producer, WolfTrap Recordings,

Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts

Steve's voice alone is a wonderful instrument, but he uses it always in the service of the material. He never overwhelms his subject, but draws the listener in with the unique combination of warmth and authority. In short, he lends instant credibility to any project he chooses to tackle. As a working partner, he remains totally respectful or the ideas of others, while giving firm and expert direction when it is needed.

--John Eaton. "John Eaton Presents The American Popular Song"

I cannot speak highly enough of Steve's skill, professionalism, and good nature. He is unflappable, and a master of difficult pronunciations in Italian, French, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Latin, and other languages on a moment's notice... I find his work uniformly admired among my colleagues.

--Rembert Herbert, Producer, Library of Congress Concert Series

The two presentations you narrated are used several times weekly by our clients, the U.S. House of Representatives House Information Systems. The shows are considered a valuable feature or the orientation and briefing sessions H.I.S. conducts for Members of Congress. It is our view that a great deal of the credit... is attributed to your fine work. You add a degree of professionalism for which there is no substitute.

--James R. Price, Congressional Research Service

Your friendly, yet forceful, delivery added to the fine product that was well received by AARP. I would like to add that working with you was a pleasure; I would recommend you to others needing narration services.

--Jill Merrick, Producer of AARP Presentation on Noise Pollution

On behalf of our production staff, I'd like to thank you for the fine job you did for us on "Mass". In the midst of innumerable changes -- with the very ground shifting under us -- it was good to know we'd found bed-rock with you. I hope we'll have the opportunity to work together again.

--Linda Blythe, Associate Producer, PBS Live Telecast of Leonard Bernstein's "Mass"

at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington

I want to convey our admiration and thanks for the high degree of professionalism you brought to voicing our "Knowledge on the Go" recordings. The material contained academic terminology and many terms from languages such as Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, German, and Arabic. You were most meticulous in ensuring proper pronunciation, and this greatly enhances the quality of these programs. Lastly, we were delighted with your voice. You read the material -- all of which was intended to be perused on paper, not read aloud, lucidly and with obvious comprehension and appropriate inflection. It was especially impressive that you were able to provide "turn-key" services for us, voicing and creating the masters in your studio.

-- Douglas J. Feith, Chairman Judaic Committee, Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington

It has been my pleasure to work with Steve Ember for about ten years. To say that he has been the best of the half-dozen narrators with whom I've worked on the Library of Congress concert broadcasts would be accurate, but would belittle the role he has played as friend, colleague, and member of the Library family. A complete broadcast operation in one man, Steve not only is a crack programmer and voice-talent, but also a knowledgeable interviewer, producer, and editor. For the Library he has interviewed many distinguished artists, including Aaron Copland and the members of the Juilliard String Quartet, then edited and produced a fascinating series of programs, using the fully equipped professional studio in his home.

-- Donald L. Leavitt, Chief, Music Division, Library of Congress
